You will absolutely love San José after this experience. Guided by young biologists you will discover nature hiding in the middle of Costa Rica's largest city. You will get to experience with all your senses, wildlife you wouldn't have imagined existed minutes away from downtown. We are an organization called Oropopo Experience, looking to change the way tourism is done in Costa Rica while supporting young scientists, researchers, and local entrepreneurs.

Additional notes:
** From May to November we recommend booking the morning slot, however, afternoons are also great.

What To Expect

Universidad de Costa Rica
We will visit the Campus of the University of Costa Rica, which holds some of the largest patches of forest in the San José Metro Area.

On our first stop, we will look for resident and migratory birds, lots of incredible insects and amazing flowers.

Then, we will see the largest indigenous stone sphere (which is world heritage) in San José.

Lastly, we'll visit the main campus where the sloths live freely and hopefully find some tasty berries.

Hidden forest in San Jose

Five stars is not high enough for this company. Our tour guide, Rigo, is very knowledgeable and professional, we learned a lot about wildlife on this tour. As an animal lover one of the main reasons I visited Costa Rica was to see sloths, we tried different places to encounter one but without any luck. We did book the UCR walking tour with OTE and to our surprise, not only we saw a lot of birds, butterflies but one of my dreams came true, I was able to see 2 sloths. Words cannot describe this moment. Rigo went above and beyond in making this happen.
Would recommend Oropopo Experience Costa Rica for your next trip here.
An amazing wildlife tour that anyone can do!

The tour takes place on the campus of the University of Costa Rica. Luis, my tour guide, showed us an incredible amount of wildlife all without leaving San José. Unlike many other wildlife tours, this one is readily accessible to anyone regardless of physical limitations. Luis has an impressive wealth of knowledge about the natural world unlike some tour guides I have encountered.

I would also recommend stopping into the Insect Museum located on the UCR campus. They have an extensive collection of insects on display.
Informative and fun

Really fun guided walk, immersing yourself in nature in an area a normal tourist would not go/not have access to, making it a memorable experience. Rigo is truly passionate, making sure you get to spot all the slots and interesting birds and insects around. Thanks again!
A great afternoon tour with Rigo

We did this tour on our first afternoon in San Jose. We met Rigo and he was very knowledgeable and passionate about Costa Rican flora and fauna. Highly recommend

This is a low key enjoyable walk through the university campus. We had a great guide who made it interesting and more entertaining. The highlight are the sloths, several of which have babies that are adorable. The grounds are very pretty near the reserve. Worth it for the price and easily accessible if you are in the city and have a few hours to kill.
Worth your time!

My wife and I adored this tour. The guide was friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable about everything we were looking at, and we saw some wonderful creatures and learned a lot. The tour only took us a couple of hours, but by the end of it we were just so pleased that we went back to look at the sloths again and they were even more active at night. Considering this tour is about the cost of a meal in a fast food restaurant in San José, it’s basically the best money we’ve spent in the city so far. Definitely recommend!

A variety of birds, some squirrels, and two sloths all in the middle of San José - not in a zoo but roaming around freely. Great experience. Highly recommended.
Excellent tour!
